<b>Royalty-free Music</b> at its simplest, commonly refers to <i>stock </i>or <i>&#8216;library music&#8217; </i><b>licensed for a single fee, without the need to pay any subsequent royalties</b>.
</p>
<p>
Royalty Free refers to a type of contract between two individuals (the licensor <i>(us)</i> and licensee <i>(you)</i>), that is employed when licensing the rights to use content such as music. The term Royalty Free means that once the content is licensed under a set of guidelines, the licensee (you) is normally free to use the content as much as you like without paying additional royalty charges. For example, when you purchase a loop bundle(s) and/or full length track(s) from trakAx.com, you are not obtaining ownership of the sounds - you are in fact purchasing a license to use the sounds within your musical compositions, whether or not your compositions are released commercially <i>(i.e. selling your songs)</i>. The original producer of the sounds will always remain the owner of the sounds. With regards to trakAx loops, you may use the sounds in combination with other sounds within <a href="http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/" title="trakAxPC">trakAxPC</a>/ <a href="http://www.trakax.com/software/mobile/" title="trakAxMobile">trakAxMobile</a> or other software packages to create your musical compositions. You may release such compositions commercially without payment of any further fees or royalties for such usage. This also covers any videos/mixes/songs that you want to post online.

<p>
With regards to our <a href="http://www.trakax.com/software/trakpacks/category/full_length_tracks/" title="royalty-free full length tracks,">royalty-free full length tracks,</a> users have the right to synchronize the audio content from any Royalty Free Music library (without any further payments) with audio and/or visual productions or applications such as<b> film &amp; video productions, training and marketing presentations, corporate videos, on-hold messages, radio presentations or commercials, television presentations or commercials, musical recordings, etc</b>.

<p>
Royalty Free does not normally mean free. It only refers to a specific licensing contract between two entities. The licensor, usually the content creator, always retains all copyright to the content, including the ability to distribute it, or allow redistribution – in regards to trakAx.com, you cannot use the sounds in isolation (i.e. when not within musical compositions/mix) as part of a commercially released project - for instance you cannot use the sounds to make another sample CD, or “library music” sound file album, or multimedia sound library CD-ROM.

The concept of Royalty Free comes from copyright, a law that allows authors and publishers of works to control the use of their work, and to set fees associated with that work. The economic incentives afforded by copyright give artists one way to make a living through their creative works.

The team here at trakAx have been very busy working on the new version of the software which is due very soon, so please forgive the slight delay in the new dance weblog. In this weblog, I am going to highlight some of the history surrounding Techno, the artists who really developed the genre as well as the different styles of techno which have evolved over the decades. </p> <p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techno" title="Techno">Techno</a> is a form of electronic music that emerged in the mid-1980s and primarily refers to a particular style developed in and around Detroit and subsequently adopted by European producers.
</p>

Techno was primarily developed in basement studios by &#8220;The Belleville Three&#8221;, a cadre of African-American men who were attending college, at the time, near Detroit, Michigan. 
</p>
<p>
The budding musicians – former high school friends and mixtape traders <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Atkins" title="Juan Atkins">Juan Atkins</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derrick_May_(musician)" title="Derrick May">Derrick May</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Saunderson" title="Kevin Saunderson">Kevin Saunderson</a> – found inspiration in Midnight Funk Association, an eclectic, 5-hour, late-night radio program hosted on various Detroit radio stations including WCHB, WGPR, and WJLB-FM from 1977 through the mid-1980s by DJ Charles &#8220;The Electrifying Mojo&#8221; Johnson. Mojo&#8217;s show featured heavy doses of electronic sounds from the likes of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Clinton_(musician)" title="George Clinton">George Clinton</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraftwerk" title="Kraftwerk">Kraftwerk</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangerine_Dream" title="Tangerine Dream">Tangerine Dream</a>, among others. 
</p>
<p>
<b>How it emerged:</b>
<br />

Though initially conceived as party music and played at parties given by posh Detroit high school clubs such as Comrades, Weekends, and Rumours, the music soon attracted enough attention to garner its own club the Music Institute. The institute, though short-lived, was known for its all night sets, its sparse setup, and its juice bar (the Institute never served liquor). Over what was really a short period of time, techno began to be seen by many of its originators and up-and-coming producers as an expression of Future Shock and post-industrial angst. It also took on increasingly urban, science-fiction oriented themes. 
</p>
<p>
The music&#8217;s producers were using the word &#8220;techno&#8221; in a general sense as early as 1984 (as in Cybotron&#8217;s seminal classic <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3owC4lV6cE" title=""Techno City"">&#8220;Techno City&#8221;</a>), and sporadic references to an ill-defined &#8220;techno-pop&#8221; could be found in the music press in the mid-1980s. However, it was not until Neil Rushton assembled the compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound Of Detroit for Virgin UK in 1988 that the word came to formally describe a genre of music. 
</p>
<p>
Techno has since been retroactively defined to encompass, among others, works dating back to &#8221;<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cn_Av9nEd4w" title="Shari Vari">Shari Vari</a>&#8221; (1981) by A Number Of Names, the earliest compositions by Cybotron (1981), Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder&#8217;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5_dwP6h7XE" title=""I Feel Love"">&#8220;I Feel Love&#8221;</a> (1977), and the more danceable selections from Kraftwerk&#8217;s repertoire between 1978 and 1983. 
</p>

In the years immediately following the first techno compilation&#8217;s release, techno was referenced in the dance music press as Detroit&#8217;s relatively high-tech, mechanical brand of house music, because on the whole, it retained the same basic structure as the soulful, minimal, post-disco style that was emanating from Chicago and New York at the time. 
</p>
<p>
The music&#8217;s producers, especially May and Saunderson, admit to having been fascinated by the Chicago club scene and being influenced by house in particular. This influence is especially evident in the tracks on the first compilation, as well as in many of the other compositions and remixes they released between 1988 and 1992. May&#8217;s 1987-88 hit &#8221;<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcVdg3aZjGE" title="Strings Of Life">Strings Of Life</a>&#8221; (released under the nom de plume Rhythim Is Rhythim), for example, is considered a classic in both the house and techno genres. However at the same time, there is also evidence that Chicago was influenced by the Detroit Three. Allegedly May loaned Chicago producers the equipment they would use to make the classic House Nation. 
</p>
<p>
A spate of techno-influenced releases by new producers in 1991-92 resulted in a rapid fragmentation and divergence of techno from the house genre. Many of these producers were based in the UK and the Netherlands, places where techno had gained a huge following and taken a crucial role in the development of the club and rave scenes. Many of these new tracks in the fledgling IDM, trance and hardcore/jungle genres took the music in more experimental and drug-influenced directions than techno&#8217;s originators intended. 
</p>
<p>
Detroit and &#8220;pure&#8221; techno remained as a subgenre, however, championed by a new crop of Detroit-area producers like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Craig" title="Carl Craig">Carl Craig</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Larkin" title="Kenny Larkin">Kenny Larkin</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richie_Hawtin" title="Richie Hawtin">Richie Hawtin</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Mills" title="Jeff Mills">Jeff Mills</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drexciya" title="Drexciya">Drexciya</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hood" title="Robert Hood">Robert Hood</a>, plus certain musicians in the UK, Belgium and Germany. Derrick May is often quoted as comparing techno to &#8220;George Clinton and Kraftwerk stuck in an elevator&#8221;, even though very little, if any, techno ever bore a stylistic resemblance to Clinton&#8217;s repertoire.

<b>True origins: </b>
</p>
<p>
For various reasons, techno is seen by the American mainstream, even among African-Americans, as &#8220;white&#8221; music, even though its originators and many of its producers are Black. The historical similarities between techno, jazz, and rock and roll, from a racial standpoint, are a point of contention among fans and musicians alike. Derrick May, in particular, has been outspoken in his criticism of the co-opting of the genre and of the misconceptions held by people of all races with regard to techno. In recent years, however, the publication of relatively accurate histories by authors Simon Reynolds (Generation Ecstasy aka Energy Flash) and Dan Sicko (Techno Rebels), plus mainstream press coverage of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Electronic_Music_Festival" title="Detroit Electronic Music Festival">Detroit Electronic Music Festival</a>, have helped to diffuse the genre&#8217;s more dubious mythology. 
</p>
<p>
The genre has further expanded as more recent pioneers of the scene such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moby" title="Moby">Moby</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_(band)" title="Orbital">Orbital</a>, and the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Sound_of_London" title="Future Sound of London">Future Sound of London</a> have made the style break through to the mainstream pop culture.

In the early 1990s, adventurous techno producers experimented with the style, spawning new genres that have taken on a life of their own. The most prominent of these techno offshoots are: 
<br />
Detroit techno : music in the style of early techno from Detroit, not necessarily of that geographical origin. Trance, which now has many subgenres, all of which differ from modern techno in that they tend to have emphasize synthesized, melodic or harmonic figures in the lower midrange frequencies, and often use build-ups and crescendos, among other differences; a short-lived subgenre called hardcore that evolved into jungle, based mainly on complex arrangements of sampled percussion, often at very high BPMs (180+), and often featuring loud, dub-influenced bass lines played at half time; 
</p>
<p>
<i>Gabba (Gabber) :</i> very loud, aggressive techno that was born in Rotterdam. The essence of the gabber sound is, for example, a distorted RolandTR-909 bass drum, overdriven to the point where it becomes a square wave and makes a recognizably melodic tone. The typical gabber track is from 160 to 220 BPM (beats per minute). 
</p>
<p>
<i>IDM </i>: representing techno&#8217;s &#8220;avant-garde&#8221;, a genre often influenced by and crossing over into ambient and experimental music, usually features complex, asymmetrical beat patterns that render it more for listening than dancing; tech house, a fusion that often combines techno with a prominent bass line and other elements of house, at a slightly lower tempo; 
</p>
<p>
<i>Acid techno </i>: Chicago inspired and UK-based style of techno that originally featured the sound of the RolandTB-303 synthesizer; and 
</p>
<p>
<i>Ghettotech </i>: which combines some of the aesthetics of techno with hip-hop, house music, and Miami bass. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Other sub-genres:</b>

<br />
<i>Bouncy techno :</i> originating in Scotland in 1993 and influenced by Detroit techno and Gabba genres. Much of its characteristics have been used in the developing Happy hardcore scene since 1995.

<i>Schranz :</i> one of many names for European hard techno: percussive, bass heavy techno with a generally simple, repetitive structure. The name is heavily associated with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Liebing" title="Chris Liebing">Chris Liebing</a> as giving rise to its popular usage since at his local record store the owner used to place aside certain records for his visits in a pile which was called the &#8216;Schranz&#8217; pile. 
</p>
<p>
<i>Swechno :</i> A name arising to describe the percussive sound arising from the Swedish techno scene, generally Swechno is accepted to be something which the prolific Adam Beyer gave rise to with labels such as his Drumcode defining the style. 
</p>
<p>
<i>Tartan techno :</i> originating in Scotland in 1991 and influenced by European techno, using vocals and piano melody hooks. 
</p>
<p>
<i>Yorkshire Bleeps and Bass :</i> a short lived, localised northern English scene in the early 1990s. 
</p>

<i>Wonky techno :</i> the birth of the term wonky techno can be traced back to London DJ Jerome Hill&#8217;s record shop where a section had been setup proclaiming to be full of &#8220;Wonky&#8221; tracks. The tunes which make up this sub-genre take the name from how they sound, tunes often have harsh industrial type sounds as well as harsh beats, often messing with the beat structure to create breaks. <a href="http://www.scandinavianyc.com/" title="Neil Landstrumm">Neil Landstrumm</a>, <a href="http://www.no-future.com/vogel_microsite/" title="Cristian Vogel">Cristian Vogel</a>, <a href="http://www.discogs.com/artist/Dave+Tarrida" title="Dave Tarrida">Dave Tarrida</a> and <a href="http://www.discogs.com/artist/Subhead" title="Subhead">Subhead</a> are often to be considered excellent examples of this sound at work. 
</p>
<p>
Occasionally some well-funded pop music producers will formulate a radio or club-friendly variant of techno. The music of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K7fL5s_1ac" title="Technotronic">Technotronic</a>, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzyFmilkd80" title="2 Unlimited">2 Unlimited</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lords_Of_Acid" title="Lords Of Acid">Lords Of Acid</a> were early examples of this phenomenon. Established pop stars also sometimes get techno makeovers, such as when <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Orbit" title="William Orbit">William Orbit</a> produced <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFzeDExYPbw" title="Madonna's "Ray Of Light"">Madonna&#8217;s &#8220;Ray Of Light&#8221;</a>.
</p>

Last Thursday, Cormac and I were invited along by the nice people at <a href="http://www.norkom.com/?gclid=CLvl473_t5YCFQOx1AodHBR5Lw" title="Norkom Technologies">Norkom Technologies</a> to take part in the IT/Science Week’s Media Day for 4th year transition students from Schools (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belvedere_College" title="Belvedere College">Belvedere College</a>, <a href="http://www.rsccaritas.ie/wwdeduie4.htm" title="Stanhope St">Stanhope St</a>, <a href="http://www.schooldays.ie/school/mount-carmel-secondary-school-rollnumber-60853T" title="Mount Carmel">Mount Carmel</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synge_Street_CBS" title="Synge Street">Synge Street</a>) around the inner city Dublin area.
</p>

</p> <p>The event was being held in Belvedere College and I have to admit (being a past pupil of <a href="http://stmarys.schoolspace.ie/index.php?option=com_frontpage&amp;Itemid=1" title="St.Mary’s College">St.Mary’s College</a>) that the facilities were superb. We were taking charge of the afternoon session, while in the morning Izakun Echezarreta and Colm MacCaba from Norkom, helped the students understand how to use Camcorders, create storyboards, record content and then upload them to their computers. The event being held was a week long computer and media program for students, and was designed to help them understand how to create basic webpages and websites, edit photos using <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Fireworks" title="Fireworks">Fireworks</a>, understand file management, how to use multimedia creation and editing software, etc.
</p>

After the morning session and their lunch, I gave a 15-20 minute presentation on how to use <a href="http://trakax.com/software/pc/" title="trakAxPC">trakAxPC</a>, so that the students would be able to edited the own videos and create some interesting content. I have to admit being a former pupil and a slight joker, I was very impressed with the silence during my presentation and the pupils must be applauded for that.
</p>
<p>
 After the presentation, the students broke up into groups around five different PCs and began to edit their videos and create some music content using some our <a href="http://trakax.com/software/trakpacks/featured/" title="trakPacks">trakPacks</a> that we provided. All the students took an active interest and they also created some really interesting videos. The videos that they created were going to be uploaded to their webpages that they had created the previous day.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable afternoon and it was great to see young people first hand using and enjoying trakAxPC. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Izakun and Colm, the people at Norkom Technologies, the students (who were excellent and well behaved) and finally, Tom Lundy from Belvedere College for providing the superb facilities.

        <p><a href="http://amymburns.musiced.net/2008/10/20/heading-to-rowan-university/" title="Visit Amy M. Burns' Weblog">Amy M. Burns</a>, an elementary general music teacher at an independent school in New Jersey and just elected as the President-Elect of the Technology Institute for Music Educators (<a href="http://www.ti-me.org/" title="TI:ME">TI:ME</a>) will be presenting Podcasting in the Elementary Music Classroom at the 3rd annual TI:ME NJ In-Service Day later today. Ms. Burns&#8217; session will show participants how to podcast using three programs that could easily fit any elementary music budget.
</p> <p>trakAxPC is one of the chosen programs and in her session, Ms. Burns will explore various ways to utilize podcasts that will easily benefit the elementary music curriculum. Tomorrow Amy will be posting the powerpoint slides and notes from her session, so I will post another link to her blog, as I&#8217;m sure that it will be of great assistance to any music teachers looking to incorporate these technologies in their classroom. For us, we are delighted that music educators are finding <a href="http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/" title="trakAxPC">trakAxPC</a> useful in a classroom setting and it&#8217;s great to think that kids are having fun with our program while learning new skills.

</p> <p><b>Wikipedia</b> defines Chill out (sometimes also chillout, chill-out, or simply chill) as a term derived from a slang injunction to relax, emerged in the early and mid-1990s as a catch-all term for various styles of relatively mellow, slow-tempo music made by contemporary producers in the electronic music scene. The genres associated with chill-out are mostly <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_music" title="Ambient">Ambient</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trip_hop" title="Trip-hop">Trip-hop</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nu_jazz" title="Nu jazz">Nu jazz</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_house" title="Ambient House">Ambient House</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_trance" title="Ambient Trance">Ambient Trance</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_age_music" title="New Age">New Age</a> and other sub-genres of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtempo" title="Downtempo">Downtempo</a> - a major branch of electronic music. The term &#8220;Chill out music&#8221;, as well as the genre itself, originated in chill rooms that were set up by DJs off to the edge of club dance floors to give patrons a chance to take a break from the hectic dance vibe and chill out with this style of music. Chill out as a musical genre or descriptive is synonymous with the more recently popularized terms &#8220;smooth electronica&#8221; and &#8220;soft techno&#8221; and is a loose genre of music blurring into several other very distinct styles of electronic and lo-fi music.

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtempo" title="Downtempo">Downtempo</a> (or Down Tempo, or DownTempo) is a laid-back electronic music style often intended more for listening and socializing than dancing, though some releases are unmistakably produced for the dance floor. Both founded their own influential labels:<a href="http://www.g-stoned.com/" title=" G-stone"> G-stone</a> and <a href="http://www.eslmusic.com/" title="Eighteenth Street Lounge">Eighteenth Street Lounge</a>. Other important labels promoting downtempo music are <a href="http://www.stereodeluxe.com/start.php" title="Stereodeluxe">Stereodeluxe</a> (Germany) and <a href="http://www.akaramusic.com/" title="Akara Music ">Akara Music </a>(UK) with their artist <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glideascope" title="Glideascope">Glideascope</a>.

On a different note, Trance music is a subgenre of electronic dance music developed in the 1990s. Perhaps the most ambiguous genre in the realm of electronic dance music (EDM), trance could be described as a melodic, more-or-less freeform style of music derived from a combination of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techno" title="techno">techno</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_music" title="house">house</a>. Regardless of its precise origins, to many club-goers, party-throwers, and EDM adherents, trance is held as a significant development within the greater sphere of post- modern dance music. 
</p>
<p>
Trance is a form of music best characterized by quarter note drum patterns, and 16th/32nd note rhythm synthesizer patterns. It has a meter of 4/4 always, with a quarter note bassdrum acting as metronome, and quarter note high-hat hits offset. This unwavering drum mechanism may be constantly tweaked with for effect, with the attack, decay, resonance, frequency, tone, delay, reverb all given liberal treatment. The tempo is generally around 130-150 bpm.

The rhythm section consists mostly of a repeating 1-4-5 (A-D-E) 32nd note sequencing arpeggio, and a bass section of minor whole notes usually drifting through the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Properties_of_musical_modes" title="aeolian scale">aeolian scale</a> (though not always). Additional rhythm sections are added and subtracted every 16 measures (sometimes 8, and sometimes 32) to add weight and anticipation to the composition. The bass chord will usually change every 4 measures. A typical trance song has 2-4 bass chords, tops.

<p>
There is a lead synth, and it will be a simple minor scale melody of 8th notes, looping every 4 measures (some have 2, some have 8. Some even have 16).Trance is produced with computerized synthesizers, drum machines, and music sequencer software (sometimes MIDI, sometimes not). The average trance song has a polyphony of 8. The most busy will have 16.

<b>Classic trance :</b> Original form of trance music, said to have originated in the very early 90&#8217;s. Characterized by less percussion than techno, more melody, arpeggiated melody, and repetitive melodic chords/arpeggios. By far one of the most popular styles of dance music, house music represents a collection of styles of electronic dance music, with its earliest forms beginning the early to mid 1980s. 
</p>
<p>
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_music" title="Wikipedia ">Wikipedia </a>gives a good explanation of the musical elements that make up the styles of House music. The common element of house music is a prominent kick drum on every beat (also known as a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-on-the-floor_(music)" title="four-to-the-floor beat">four-to-the-floor beat</a>), usually generated by a drum machine or sampler. The kick drum sound is augmented by various kick fills and extended dropouts. The drum track is filled out with hihat cymbal patterns on the eighth-note offbeats, and a snare drum or clap sound on beats two and four of every bar. This pattern is derived from so-called &#8220;four-on-the-floor&#8221; dance drumbeats of the 1960s and especially the 1970s disco drummers. Producers commonly layer sampled drum sounds to achieve a more complex sound, filling out the audio spectrum and tailoring the mix for large club sound systems. 
</p>
<p>
House music is uptempo music for dancing and has a tempo range of between 118 and 135 bpm. Producers use many different sound sources for bass sounds in house music, from continuous, repeating electronically-generated lines sequenced on a synthesizer such as a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TB-303" title="Roland TB-303">Roland TB-303</a> to studio recordings or samples of live electric bassists, or simply filtered-down samples from whole stereo recordings (from classic funk tracks or any other song). Electronically-generated sounds and samples of recordings from genres such as jazz, blues and synth pop are often added to the foundation of the drum beat and synth bass line. House songs may also include disco or soul-style and gospel vocals and additional percussion. Techno and trance, which developed alongside house music, share this basic beat infrastructure, but they usually eschew house&#8217;s live-music-influenced feel and Black or Latin music influences in favor of more synthetic sound sources and approach.

The people over at <a href="http://www.3345.com.au/cyclopedia/" title="3345.com">3345.com</a> also gives us a good insight into the elements that go into making house music as well as the different styles of house which are outlined below. House consists of a 4/4 regular beat, rolling keyboards, synthesizers, male or female vocals and plenty of attitude. Upon the main foundation, samples of music are added, such as jazz, blues, synth pop and so on. It is these elements that define the bewildering number of different house styles. Artists include; <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seamus_Haji" title="Seamus Haji">Seamus Haji</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Jack" title="Junior Jack">Junior Jack</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StoneBridge_(DJ)" title="Stonebridge">Stonebridge</a>, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApkDwANVlkQ" title="Blvd East">Blvd East</a> and many more.

<p>
<b>House music : Styles </b>
</p>
<p>
<b>Acid house</b> : A Chicago derivative built around the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TB-303" title="Roland TB-303">Roland TB-303</a> bassline machine. Hard, uncompromising, tweaking samples produce a hypnotic effect.

<br />
<b>Ambient house</b> : Mixing the moody atmospheric sounds of New Age and ambient music with pulsating house beats. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Chicago house</b> : Simple basslines, driving <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-on-the-floor_(music)" title="four-on-the-floor">four-on-the-floor</a> percussion and textured keyboard lines are the elements of the original house sound. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Deep house</b> : A slower variant of house (around 120 BPM) with warm sometimes hypnotic melodies that originated in San Francisco. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Epic house</b> : A variant of progressive house featuring lush synth-fills and dramatic (some would say pretentious) beat breakdowns. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Freestyle house</b> : A Latin variant of NY house music, which began development in the early 1980s by producers like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Jellybean_Benitez" title="John Jellybean Benitez">John Jellybean Benitez</a>. Seen by some as an evolution of electro funk.

<b>Garage</b> : This term has changed meaning several times over the years. The UK definition relates to New York&#8217;s version of deep house, originally named after a certain style of soulful disco played at legendary club the Paradise Garage, although the original Garage sound was much more of an eclectic mix of many different kinds of records. The UK version is pronounced &#8220;ga-raaj&#8221;. May also be called the Jersey Sound due to the close connection many of its artists and producers have with New Jersey such as the legendary <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shep_Pettibone" title="Shep Pettibone">Shep Pettibone</a> and <a href="http://www.discogs.com/artist/Tony+Humphries" title="Tony Humphries">Tony Humphries</a> at Zanzibar in Newark, NJ. Not to be confused with speed garage or the British style nowadays called UKG pronounced &#8220;garridje&#8221;. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Ghetto house</b> : A variation from Chicago that features minimal, 808 and 909 drum machine driven tracks, and profane (sometimes sexually explicit) lyrics. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Hip house</b> : The simple fusion of rap rhymes with house beats. Mainly popular for a brief moment in the late 80s. Most famous record is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungle_Brothers" title="Jungle Brothers">Jungle Brothers</a> &#8220;Girl I&#8217;ll House You.&#8221;

<b>Hard house</b> : House music on the harder side, leaning more towards aggressive &#8216;hoover&#8217; type sounds. The style was generally fast tempo.

<b>Hi-NRG</b> : Called &#8220;high energy&#8221;. Popular in the gay scene, sometimes reminiscent of freestyle house. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Italo house </b>: Slick production techniques, catchy melodies, rousing piano lines and American vocal styling typifies the Italian ("Italo") house sound. A modulating <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_Moroder" title="Giorgio Moroder">Giorgio Moroder</a> style bassline is also a trademark of this style. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Latin House</b> : Borrows heavily from Salsa and Brazilian beats, most notably in &#8220; Brazil over Zurich.&#8221; This style was perfected and proliferated by DJ Reyna J in Chicago&#8217;s underground scene in the late 1990s. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Minimal House</b> : (or Microhouse) Simple, 4/4 beats (usually around 125-130 beats-per-minute) usually only barely accompanied by sparse, percussive effects, synthesizer work, and simplistic vocals. 
</p>
<p>
<b>New York house</b> : New York&#8217;s uptempo dance music, referred to simply as club music by some. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Pop house</b> : The use of house production styles to make traditional pop artists more acceptable on the dancefloor results in the pop house phenomenon. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Progressive house</b> : Progressive house is typified by accelerating peaks and troughs throughout a track&#8217;s duration, and are, in general, less obvious than in hard house. Layering different sound on top of each other and slowly bringing them in and out of the mix is a key idea behind the progressive movement. Some of this kind of music sounds like a cousin of trance music. 
</p>
<p>
<b>French house</b> : A late 1990s house sound developed in France. Inspired by the &#8216;70s and &#8216;80s funk and disco sounds. Mostly features a typical sound &#8220;filter&#8221; effect. e.g. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daft_punk" title="Daft Punk">Daft Punk</a>

<b>Pumpin&#8217; House</b> : Developed in the late 90&#8217;s and related to French house, Pumpin&#8217; House also often samples disco, rock, jazz, and/or funk loops (sometimes creating dense layered textures) and usually makes extensive use of filters, but gains its appellation from its heavy use of compression, which makes tracks surge and pulse. It is characterized by intense, up-front drum programming, heavy funk influence, and very emphasized basslines, often sampled from live players. Famous producers include <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olav_Basoski" title="Olav Basoski">Olav Basoski</a> ( Holland), <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grant_Nelson" title="Grant Nelson">Grant Nelson</a> ( UK), and <a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&amp;friendID=16499826" title="Monkey Bars">Monkey Bars</a> ( US). Typical BPM range is 127-133. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Sexy house</b> : Sexy house draws its sounds from soul and funk with a 4/4 beat, and is sometimes confused with an acid jazz sound. Sexy house doesn&#8217;t feature as much synthesizer sounds (but does occasionally use cheesy 1980s synth samples) as other genres, but typically features horn sections, electric pianos and congas, but it is less jazzy or downtempo as trip-hop. Typical beats per minute are 125~128. The melody of this style is inspired from 1970s black soul and funk, and it features strong bass drum sound, with a softer higher frequencies. It is found played in bars and restaurants. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Tech house</b> : Tech substitutes typical booming house kickdrums with shorter, often distorted kicks, smaller hi-hats, and noisier snares. House&#8217;s funky jazz loops are replaced with techno-sounding synth lines. Closely related to microhouse. 
</p>
<p>
<b>Tribal house</b> : Popularized by remixer/DJ <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Vasquez" title="Junior Vasquez">Junior Vasquez</a> in New York, characterized by lots of percussion and world music style rhythms.

<b>Ultra house</b> : Extremely fast house beats typically 160 to 220 beats per minute, the same speed as &#8220;jungle&#8221; music.

<b>Electro house</b> : Sometimes resembles tech house, but often influenced by the &#8220;electro&#8221; sound of the early 1980&#8217;s, aka breakdancing music, via samples or just synthesizer usage.

        <p>In this educational segment we are going to change pace a bit and concentrate on the area of video compression. We have received quite a few messages on our forum relating to this issue, so hopefully this weblog will help clear up some of the confusion regarding video compression.&nbsp;
</p> <p>Understanding video compression is important because uncompressed digital video can take up a staggering amount of room in its original form. By compressing the video, you make it easier to store. Without video compression, Internet video would simply not be possible. It&#8217;s that important. Video files are HUGE. Download times for raw, uncompressed video would be so high that no one would bother, even at broadband speeds. 
</p>
<p>
<b>An Introduction to Video Compression</b>
</p>
<p>
A video (file types like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVI" title="AVI">AVI</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mpeg" title="MPEG">MPEG</a>) is a collection of several images being shown. Each image is called frames and the amount of images shown per second is called frames per second or simply FPS. The more frames per second your video has, the better, since more realistic the image will be. Videos are usually saved using at least TV quality settings, i.e. 30 frames per second. Have you ever exported a finished edit, only to find that the file was so big you couldn’t upload it to a website, send it to a friend, or even burn it on a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd" title="dvd">dvd</a>? Or maybe you’ve created a masterpiece, exported, and upon playback your video looks like a bunch of ugly blocks and spots. Understanding video compression and learning how to use it will help you overcome these problems. 
</p>
<p>
<b>What Is Video Compression?</b>
</p>
<p>
Video compression is a process that reduces the amount of data contained in a video file, thus making the file smaller. It is possible to compress digital video because it contains redundant information. Imagine a tripod shot of a plane flying across a blue sky. The majority of the background remains the same from frame to frame. Instead of storing the sky data for every frame, a compressed video can re-use the sky data from a previous frame until there is a change. So if the background is unchanged for 12 frames, the information can be stored in 1 frame instead of 12. The process takes place with each individual pixel, not just frames. This allows for the most efficient reduction of data redundancy.

<b>Does Video Compression Affect Video Quality?</b>
</p>
<p>
Yes. By reducing the amount of video data, it’s only natural that details of the video are lost. Before you decide to give up on video compression though, take note that even <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd" title="DVD">DVD</a>s contain compressed video. Generally, high quality video is less compressed and takes up more disk space. Compressing video for the internet can be a challenge because you want to make the file small while keeping quality as high as possible. We’ve all seen blocky videos on the internet, especially on sites like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/" title="YouTube">YouTube</a>, where they automatically compress the clips you upload. With some testing and tweaking though, it is possible to create web videos that still look good.

<b>Video Codecs and Compression</b>
</p>
<p>
Video is compressed by software or devices called Codecs (Compressor-Decompressor). Each codec uses a unique algorithm to eliminate data redundancy and make the file smaller. If you have ever tried to play a downloaded video and had it fail, it may have been because your computer wasn’t equipped with the proper codec to interpret the video. Some popular codecs include DVIX, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.264, and WMV).

        <p>In this second segment of our educational weblog, we are going to look at the importance of BPM.
</p>
<p>
 BPM stands for beats per minute and refers to the number of beats that occur in a minute of time for a given piece of music. BPM is a measurement of tempo.
<br />

</p> <p>The importance of BPMs is demonstrated when beat matching, which is a style of mixing. This style is based on the concept of having 2 different songs with two different BPMs that are not perfectly matched with one another. The goal is to get the two songs to match by either increasing or decreasing the speed of one or both songs, until their BPMs level out and match one another.

In his article, <b><a href="http://www.discjockey101.com/oct2004.html" title="BPM and Genres: From Hip Hop to Break-Beat, Techno to Trip Hop">BPM and Genres: From Hip Hop to Break-Beat, Techno to Trip Hop</a></b>, Rob Wegner explains the significance of BPM’s to beat mixing and how it is actually related to the music genre. 
</p>
<p>
He also shows how music genres like Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Jazz, Drum-n-Bass, etc, are generally confined to a specific BPM range.
</p>
<p>
The BPM of a song is not only relevant to beat mixing; it&#8217;s also strongly related to music genre. For example, if a DJ raises the beats per minute or BPM (i.e., the drum beats) of a hip hop song to approximately 135 BPM, the song&#8217;s beats become &#8220;break-beat.&#8221;
</p>
<p>
Alternatively, if a DJ lowers the BPM of a techno or hard house track to 90 BPM, the song becomes &#8220;trip hop.&#8221;

&#8220;Trip hop,&#8221; for example, is characterized as being downtempo jazz, funk, and soul-inflected break-beats that includes experimental psychotropic atmospherics (i.e, the &#8220;trip&#8221; part). Even though trip hop is not downtempo &#8220;techno&#8221; and &#8220;hard house&#8221; tracks per se, a DJ is able to create&#8212;in a live performance setting&#8212;a trip hop-like track by simply slowing down the BPM.

As the chart above shows, music genres are generally confined to a specific BPM range. For example, a house track would not be considered &#8220;house&#8221; (in the traditional sense) if it had a tempo of 70 BPM. Likewise, a hip hop track would not be considered &#8220;hip hop&#8221; (again, in the traditional sense) if its BPM was pitched up to 140 BPM.

If you&#8217;re a DJ that is specialized in a specific genre such as &#8220;only tribal house,&#8221; it&#8217;s very unlikely that you&#8217;ll have to spend time determining and labeling BPM for the tracks in your music library. This is because these tracks are already near each other in terms of BPM range. On the other hand, some genres&#8212;such as hip hop&#8212;have a wider BPM range and may require a little time calculating and sorting songs by BPM.

        <p>With the release of the new trakAxPC software very close, the trakAx team have decided to post some educational resources and useful links that will hopefully help users understand the basics of music and video structure and in turn, help you create better music and video creations.
</p> <p>In a really interesting article entitled <a href="http://www.discjockey101.com/oct2001.html" title="“Beat Mixing: Understanding Drum Beats”">“Beat Mixing: Understanding Drum Beats”</a>, the author <a href="http://www.discjockey101.com/robwegner1.html" title="Rob Wegner">Rob Wegner</a> explains the fundamentals of a drum beat. Wegner brings us through the basics of beat counting and understanding measures, while also explaining how DJ’s use these techniques when “phasing” in and out of songs.
</p>
<p>
A further example, which will help you understand beat counting and beat measures, is a video which was posted on YouTube by A1partydj’s, that explains in excellent detail how to beat count when mixing songs. It also provides an opportunity to actually hear the beats being played so you can count along to the beat yourself.

<b>Beat Mixing: Understanding Drum Beats</b>

One way that you can better understand beat mixing is to understand basic drumming. This is because dance DJ&#8217;s listen to the rhythm, as provided by the drum tempo, in order to beat mix. Even though most of today&#8217;s dance tracks are composed with computer generated drum beats, these &#8220;drum fills&#8221; generally replicate the elements of a classic drum-set. In addition, the turntable, in terms of its incorporation into orchestras, is classified as a percussion instrument.

<p>
First, let&#8217;s review the basic drum-set. As Figure 1 shows, a simple set includes a bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, cymbals, and tom toms.

Dance music is almost always in 4/4 time (3/4 time can be found in Polka and Waltz). 4/4 time is basically counting 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, etc. Each count (or block) of fours is a measure. If you were to hit the bass drum and snare drum every time you counted to four, it would look like this (reading from left to right) (see Figure 2):

Now let&#8217;s play the snare drum on the 2nd and 4th beat (where you snap your fingers) and the bass drum on the first and third beat. The note change will appear as follows (see Figure 3):

Most DJ&#8217;s cue their song on the first beat (where the bass drum often starts) at the beginning of a measure. When a DJ is mixing a &#8220;32 beat in-and-out,&#8221; it means the DJ mixed for this length of time (see Figure 4):

Let&#8217;s call the above 32 beat segment a &#8220;phrase.&#8221; By &#8220;phrasing,&#8221; a DJ is starting the intro exactly at the beginning of a segment and matching it to the outro of a song with the same number of beats (i.e., 32 beat outro). If the intro is only 16 beats, then the DJ must match that intro with 16 beats of an outgoing song&#8217;s outro. Fortunately for today&#8217;s DJ&#8217;s, the intro&#8217;s and outro&#8217;s of most dance tracks are essentially drum beats.

<p>
A common mistake is failing to compare the number of beats in an intro to an outgoing song&#8217;s outro. For example, if a DJ starts to beat match a song with a 32 beat intro into a song with a 16 beat outro, the change at the 17th beat of the outro may ruin the mix (particularly if the intro was noticeable). If the DJ mixed out of the song with the 16 beat outro, then the remaining 16 beats of the intro will most likely consist of just drums, which will most likely drop the energy level.
</p>
<p>
Finally, you should note that most dance songs maintain the 32 beat pattern throughout the track. In other words, even though the intro may have ended after 32 beats (or four 32 beat segments, etc.), the verse may be 32 beats (or two 32 beat segments), the chorus 32 beats (or two 32 beat segments), etc. In some instances, you may discover a song that has a 16 beat segment between several 32 beat segments. Nevertheless, you can usually expect a change after every 32 beats. This should help you to predict change(s), particularly when you need to find a segment to mix out of a song that&#8217;s not working.

From a brief email conversation with Richard and reading his blog, it is clear that he is completely passionate about musical education for people of all ages. Richard&#8217;s <a href="http://techtoysandtunes.blogspot.com/" title="blog">blog</a> is a great resource for anyone involved in music education. On his site, you will also see a link for <a href="http://mustech.net/100-me-bloggers" title="ME Bloggers">ME Bloggers</a> (Music Education Bloggers), which lists the Top 100 Music Education Bloggers. I had a quick look around some of the blogs mentioned and they are full of interesting and exciting ideas on how to make teaching music more enjoyable for everyone involved.
</p>
<p>
It seems that music education can often (in Ireland anyway) be limited to students who quickly show a tangible talent for music, rather than being an integral part of a person&#8217;s complete schooling. Obviously not everyone is going to be the next Mozart or Bob Dylan, but that shouldn&#8217;t stop kids (actually people of all ages) simply having fun experimenting with music and exploring their creativity. We don&#8217;t stop kids playing soccer for example, just because they will never play for Manchester United - we play for the sheer fun of it, regardless of our ability.
</p>
<p>
Hopefully, our free application, trakAxPC, will go a little way in making music more accessible for the average kid/person. The whole concept for the application came from Jim (who is also my father), when he saw one of my brothers who is obsessed with music, struggle as a teenager to learn the guitar. He felt that there were so many teenagers out there who try and learn an instrument, but when faced with the difficulty of actually mastering it, quickly get fed up and more than often, quit trying. If they could create something that sounded half-decent within a short period of time, then they would be encouraged to flex their creativity and become involved in the process.
</p>
<p>
Anyway - we&#8217;ve been extremely busy over the last few weeks. We are coming towards the end of the development of the new release and we think it&#8217;s looking quite sweet. Cormac will post a quick sneak peak video next week of some of the new features and functionality that we&#8217;ve been working on and we hope you&#8217;ll enjoy the new features.
