Veritasium Science Video Blog

We stumbled across this website and thought it was too good not to share. ”Veritasium” is a science video blog which aims to present topics in all areas of science from the simplest to the most complex. The goal is to make scientific ideas clear, accessible, and interesting and I for one have certainly learned a few things.

Veritas is Latin for truth, and the ending ‘ium’ makes it into an element - the element of truth. These short films are ideal for students, teachers, and schools as they are a free resource on a range of topics. Some videos include experiments that can be tried at school or at home. Others include experiments with specialized apparatus that would be difficult to observe otherwise.

Here is a basic example that explains Newton’s Third Law.

Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, why not create a simple video expressing your love for that someone special in your life. Instead of purchasing a boring run-of-the-mill card, why not spend some time putting together an online video card. You can use some old camera footage, old photos, add some text, etc.  A simple video with some video, photos and your favourite song will create something meaningful and emotional. Plus you will get some serious brownie points for going to all that effort!!!!

In this first video, Dan Winne has created a Valentine’s Day video for his wife using pictures and stop motion. It’s a simple video which really captures the essence of love and relationships, represented in clips like the two toothbrushes in the cup. By taking tons of photos during the creation process and then placing them side by side in trakAxPC, you too can create a great looking stop motion video. There is a new photo slideshow creator coming in the new release of trakAxPC which will make this process even easier. We will be announcing a release date shortly.

Perhaps you own a small business like a gift shop, flower shop, café/restaurant, etc. and are looking for ways to promote your products and services for Valentine’s Day. Sneak Peak - Small Business Videos

We have been working really, really hard on the upcoming release. We are getting very close to finishing it and hope to confirm a release date shortly. It will be a huge step for the software and the new features are really exciting. Probably the most requested feature is .Mov support. We decided to combine testing the .Mov support with another area we have been working on – our Small Business Area – and create a short business video filmed with a Kodak Zi8 (.Mov format).

We noticed that a huge proportion of our customers are small businesses and our upcoming Small Business Area will be an exhaustive range of resources to help small businesses use video to promote their product and services in a really cost-effective, but professional way. As part of this process, we decided to set ourselves the challenge of creating a small business video from scratch for a budget of $200.

We teamed up with our good friends, Deirdre Hynes and Aoife Callaghan, the amazingly talented wedding consultants from The Bridal Loungelocated just up the road from us in Dublin, to create our video. Our aim was to convey their services and explain their wedding inspiration consultations in a short video, which was both engaging and fun.

Here is the final cut:

Our Budget was spent like this:

We used the lamps that the girls had in their studio as well as the natural light from windows. We filmed the interview segment of the video in the morning and then accompanied them to a photo shoot that afternoon, so all told there was around 6 hours max of filming done, so less than 1 business day.

Our Small Business Area, which will be launched to coincide with the new release, will cover all these topics in detail and give you all the tips you need to take the plunge and start creating a video for your business.

Network Support Coming in New Release

Just a quick update on where we are with the new release. Over the last few months, we have had a lot of users asking for both network support and the ability to change the location of the cache folder when parsing files, as users wanted to use external drives and networks to store files.

In the forthcoming release, we have added the ability to access all the computers on your network. You can now also pick the location where you would like your files to parse.  For example, now you can cache your files to another location on your PC, an external hard drive or even another computer that is on your network or homegroup.

This can be extremely useful tool for schools, business and home users with multiple machines as you can use one machine or server to store all your media and then cache it to a dedicated folder. Other users on the network can access your machine through the media browser and load the file(s) immediately with no load times once their machine is directed to the dedicated folder.

With Network Support, you can also mix media on any machine within that network once you have set up the proper permissions within the Windows Environment.

We think it is pretty cool and as users obtain more PCs in the home, school or business, trakAxPC will be able to adjust and give users more flexibility with their media.
