decoding video takes a long time!

I just downloaded the trial version and was wondering if it’s normal for the video to take 7+ mins to begin playing in the video output window?  In the browser window, I select a .avi or .mpg video and it’s several mins before the playback starts.  I just don’t know if that’s the norm or not.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mr.AJ

Thanks for the post.

No, it should not take 7 or 8 minutes to preview a file in the media browser. It should only take a couple of seconds. trakAxPC reads codecs and directx filters that are already installed on your PC. It seems like the application is using a directx filter/codec installed on your machine and it is taking a long time to decode. Do these files play okay in windows media player?

There is a codec pack called K-Lite codec pack http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm
that is updated frequently and checks and installs all the essential codecs and direct X filters on your PC and will un-install old or corrupt codecs and filters. I would recommend installing this codec pack and then try the files again.

In the new update we have all our codecs and filters in-bulit so this will be not necessary but it is good pack to have if you wish all files to play in players like windows media player.

Hopefully this will solve the issue you are having, if not please do not hesitate to contact me and we can look at some the files in question in more detail.

Thanks and best regards

Cormac

Thank you, I will try that now.  I’m working on the program as we speak.  I really like the fact that scrubbing the video is smooth!!  Big plus!!!  I’ve done other videos with WMM and I think they’re a little too elementary-looking for me and I want to improve so I’m really hoping your software is the missing piece.  I have Adobe Premier Pro 3 but it’s too involved and too much of a memory hog to work with smoothly but I like the chromakey capability it provides.  As a photographer however, I can use my photography background to come up with a decent “studio” look so that wouldn’t be a big deal not to have.  But, speed is essential.  Also, I’m a minister and want to put some ministry videos up on GodTube and YouTube but again, I want quality not desktop webcam (fingers crossed).  Ok, going to get the codec(s) now and try it.  Thanks for the great response time and support!!

Oh, I forgot, yes, they play fine in Windows Media player.  When you have a moment check out what I have created in WMM on YouTube.  My username is “eketelon” there as well.  Best wishes.

Ok, I’ve tested it.  I downloaded and installed the codecs from the site you recommended.  It removed a few and asked to reboot.  I ran the install again and selected most of the options available.  One of the problems is, I don’t know which to choose from and how to configure it.  Ok, that’s probably just on me. LOL!

Since installing the codecs and running TrakAx, .avi and .mpg files that I converted (from .mod) a couple weeks ago and they are approx. 450 - 500 megs still take a long time but not as long as before (3mins -vs- 7mins).

.WMV files that I converted earlier today only take 2-3 seconds (30 megs approx.)!  But, the same files as .avi still take 2-3 mins to decode in the program.

WHAT IT SEEMS LIKE TO ME:
When I download the files as .mod from my camera, I need to convert them to .WMV files before using them in TrakAx.

I think the program will do what I want but I’m going to need to take the time to convert them as .wmv files first and of course that can take a long time but I guess it’s a necessary evil unless there is a configuration change I need to make to the codec(s).

Thanks again and any input you have is greatly appreciated.

Hi Mr Aj

Thanks for the update. I think I understanding what you trying to do

When trakAx brings a file into the mixing screen it parses the file once so that you can access every single frame and scrub through the file frame by frame quickly. This also frees up the processor when mixing. Of course if the file is large it will take a little longer. This process only happens the first time you bring the file into the mixing screen. If you want to bring the file in again at any time it will do so instantly.

We have a developed a new way of parsing the files for the next update which is described in our development roadmap. The file will now parse within the mixing screen and you can access an area immediately within that file while the parsing continues in the background. You will also be able to parse multiple files at the same time and work in the application while parsing in occurring.

http://www.trakax.com/software/about/comments/development_update_thumbnails_and_quicker_parsing_coming_soon/

In regards to .mod and .vob files, in the new update we will decode these file formats within the application so there will be no need to convert to wmv or avi in order to mix or edit these files.

Also thanks for sending on the info for your YouTube channel and I will check them out later today.

I hope this make sense and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Best regards

Cormac

Thanks, I found out that the person uses TrakAx and the Sony “something” program.  For THAT particular video, she used the Sony program and the effect was built in.

Thanks again for all your help!!

Hi,
I have the same issue importing MP4 files coming from GoPro Camera. Sometimes it takes 45 minutes to parse a file (1 to 3 Go). It’s a long time.
I have seen in this thread that a new way to parse files will be delivered in the next version (post dated February 2011).
I have the 3.01.1 version (installed one week ago) and I don’t think this new way to parse files is included in it. I had a look on the TrakAxPC development road map and I didn’t find out any information about the delivery of a new update…
Have you got additional information or do you think I could reduce the parsing time in another way?
Thanks.
