Hi,

Thanks for releasing V4! It’s really handy for me to directly open DVD VTS files in TrakAxPC Pro without first having to convert them to MP4 files.

I post audio and video files on a website for people to view and download.  The files are actually hosted on archive.org and the links are posted on my website.  People viewing my website can click the audio and video files and they will stream from archive.org.

My question is now that you have eliminated the mp3 file type what audio file type should I use that will play with people’s Windows Media Player and will also work when downloaded to a MP3 player or an ipod?  The mp3 file format was good because it played all three ways listed above.  I read the answer about m4a being better, becoming more popular than mp3, etc. but Windows Media Player won’t play it and I can’t expect a website visitor to go looking for a codec pack to add the capability.

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for your question. We would still recommend exporting your audio file to our .M4A file format (128kbps - CD quality).

However, you can save your file as a .WAV (however it will be very large in size) and windows own file type .WMA. You can convert these files directly in iTunes and will play on iPods. - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550

These files will also play in Windows Media Player without any converting required.

I hope this helps, and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate in contacting us,

Best regards,

Colm

Hi Colm,

This turns out to not be a problem, only a question of which file format is the best and easiest for ipod and mp3 player users to download.

I uploaded an audio file in both m4a and wma formats to archive.org.  The m4a remained just a m4a file but archive.org kept the wma format plus converted it to both mp3 and ogg.  I then linked both the m4a and mp3 files to my website and both streamed well from archive.org.  So, the only question now is to use wma or mp3.  The m4a won’t work for mp3 player users and isn’t an option.  Which format do you think ipod users would prefer, wma or mp3?

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the reply and glad things worked out.

For ease us, I would recommend using the MP3 file format. There are reasons for using both, but MP3’s are more practical and commonly used.

“MP3 files are very easy to transfer to mobile devices and burn to CD’s for listening on the move. Stereo CD players can have the feature to read MP3 files, allowing users to burn data discs of MP3 files. This type of disc can hold hundreds of songs instead of being limited to an audio recording time. WMA files cannot be easily converted to other formats due to its encryption process. For this reason, WMA files are not useful for much more than playing on a home computer or laptop.”
