tempo problems

Hey guys, sorry to be such a noob and you must get this all the time but I can not figure out how to sort the tempos of tracks.

Essentially what I want to be doing is recording one layer of a song such as the guitar chords and then recording another part like the melody and putting the two together.

Now I record both to a metronome so no problems there and both will play through trakutter at the correct tempo individually but I can’t get them to play at the same speed in the mix.

I have made sure to disable beatsyncing and have edited the bpm in trakcutter and in segment properties but they still are not coming through at the correct tempo. One track will always be much slower or much faster. Really confused now because have watched all the tutorials on bpm etc. and still not been able to get it sussed. Am I missing something?

Thanks

Hi Kit,

Thanks for the question.

What are the individual tempos of each of the files? Have you tried playing them together with the beat-syncing icons enabled on both tracks and the Global tempo set to a value that corresponds with one of the files (see video below)? Did they sound like they were playing at different speeds? You could also turn on the High Quality stretching engine in the BPM Parameters on the track name for each file.

Apologies if this seems like a simple answer but I’m just trying to get as much information as possible before I can fully answer the question.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Best regards,

Colm

Thanks for your quick reply.

One track is 134 and the other which I am trying to adjust to fit to it is 150. I tried setting the global tempo to 134 and letting them be beatsynced but not joy. Also then I have the problem that I can’t place them exactly enough as it tries to fit the track to where the ‘beats’ are but won’t let you align them as freely as you can with beat syncing off.

I also tried just a test mix of two tracks of a metronome playing at 150 bpm. I was able to get them to both play at the same time and also to make one the offbeats to the other but again not when beatsynced. This seems kinda bizarre because you can’t get much more regular than with a metronome.

I tried your suggestion of the high quality stretching but it didn’t make a difference.

In the end, I’m hoping to make split screen tracks using audio associated with video so I know that beatsyncing will be unlocked but I just can’t get the tempo of the tracks to change.

Also, tracks that were recorded along to the same backing track are being read by trakax at different tempos. (?)

And when tracks have a regular unchanging beat eg like a metronome beat, it will fit for a bar or so and then slowly go out of sync.

I just record on a camera and then import the files to the laptop and access them via the media browser.

Hi Kit,

Thanks for the answer, as it makes a lot more sense now. I did not realise the audio files were combined with video files. Just to be clear are you trying to make a music video (multi-layer)or are you just recording to use the audio files.

When audio is associated with video and you bring the video file into the mixing screen, the audio and video will play at their normal detected bpm (i.e. how they were originally recorded)and will be automatically disabled from the global tempo.

If you have recorded the track using the metronome, that is exactly how it is recorded, as we are not adding any algorithms to it as it is disabled from the beat-syncing. You will find it very difficult to match the tempos perfectly just using the video recordings.

Have you tried recording your audio/instruments using a dedicated audio multi-track recorder/editor such as (Free). You can also record yourself with your camcorder while recording in your audio and match them up perfectly using trakAxPC to create your video. Click the links below for examples

I hope this helps,

Thanks so much I’ll give that a try. I didn’t realise that even if I was only using the audio of an audio/video pair then it would still be an issue. I’ll see how it goes this way.
