Hi, my name is katsu. When I import my video file, that is mpg, 600MB, aspect ratio 16:9, trakAx imports the file as 4:3 aspect ratio, so the picture gets vertically squeezed. How can I preserve the aspect ratio as original file? or Can I change the aspect ratio at trakAx while mixing? Look forward to your help! Thanks.

Hi Katsu

Thanks for your post.

If you want to export your mix to an aspect ratio of 16:9, go to the target frame size drop down box in the Mixing Screen and select an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Please check our wiki to find out more:

http://www.trakax.com/software/wiki/Category:Mixing_Window::Target_Video_Frame_Size/

Once this is selected, click on the export button and your video will be exported with an aspect ratio of 16:9.

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards

Cormac

I’m having the same problem…

The videos from my camera in my documents have an aspect raito of 16:9, but when played in trakax, they get displayed as 4:3.
When I select an aspect ratio of 16:9 in the target frame size drop down box, and export, it just adds pillar boxes onto the sides (the actual video in the middle is still squashed).

Is there any way of solving this???
Thanks smile

Hi TheGuy

Thanks for your post.

The border usually happens because the aspect ratio of the original video is different from the target frame size set in the mix.

Can you check that the aspect ratio of the original file is 16:9, just so we can count this out?

To do this right click on the file in the media browser and select properties:(see screenshot)

In the properties window it will tell you the frame dimensions of the video file:(see screenshot)

Also when the video is previewed in the Media Browser, does it play in the 16:9 aspect ratio? It should play as 16:9 because trakAx plays the file in its original aspect ratio when previewed from the Media Browser.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

The properties in the media browser say that the video’s dimensions are only 720/576...does this mean trakax isn’t reading the file properly or am I mistaken in thinking the original file has an aspect ratio of 16:9?

Hi TheGuy

Thanks for the update.

I would believe that the file is 720 x 576

There is a way to check this independently using VLC Player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Which is a great free robust player that plays almost any file format and codec.

Once you have downloaded the application.

Play the file in VLC (if it is a short file click pause straight after playing)

Then go to Tools/Codec Information (see screenshot)

The Media Information window will pop up and in the Codec Details Tab it will display the frame resolution (see screenshot)

If this does not display 720 x 576 but the aspect ratio of 16:9, please let me know and we will look into this further,

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

Cormac

Hi again,

It says in the Tools/Codec Information that it is indeed 720 x 576.
However when I click on Video/Aspect Ratio, and click default, it plays the same as when I click 16:9. If I click any other setting, it warps the video.. so I’m assuming that the video is 16:9.
Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

Also, the files off my camera are originally an AVCHD 1080i format.
I convert them to an MPEG-2 file format.....could this be something to do with the problem???
Thanks

Hi TheGuy

It is probably an issue with the converter you are using to convert the AVCHD files.

Make sure that output settings in your converter application are set to 1280x720(16:9) or 1920x1080 (16:9)

It seems like the setting you are using in your converter program is 720x576 (5:4 Pal DV)at the moment.

Best regards
